Formative
Definition Used to gather and measure students' knowledge. They are usually low stakes which means they do not hold much value in terms of grades. They can be used to modify instruction if needed.
Example The students turn in a circle map over a writing topic for the teacher to check for understanding and give feedback on before the students begin writing.
Example A teacher circulates while students work together on solving a problem. The teacher listens to their conversations and asks comprehension questions to check for understanding over the topic.

Interim/Benchmark
Definition Used to compare the students' performance based on an aligned set of standards. They are usually given within the same school year.
Example The 9-week assessments mandated by the school district that measure the students' knowledge over the content that was taught during that 9-week period.
Example The STAAR test which is a Texas state mandated assessment given to students at the end of their 3rd grade year and every year following.
Performance
Definition Used for students to show their skills, knowledge, and work through different types of tasks.
Example The students complete a research project over a planet they have been learning about in science. They present the project to the class in the form of a poster.

Example The students write an open-ended response that consists of 2-3 sentences explaining why 7,463 is greater than 7,364.
Diagnostic
Definition Used to determine students' knowledge on a topic before it is taught. Can be used to guide instruction or as a baseline to measure student growth.
Example The teacher gives a pretest aligned to the post assessment to check their understanding and the effectiveness of the lesson over comparing numbers using the appropriate mathematical symbols.

Summative
Definition Used to determine the students' mastery at the end of a unit or other benchmark. They are usually high stakes which means they hold a heavy value in the students' grades

Example The students turns in a final copy of an essay they have been working on throughout the unit.
