Formative
Definition:When a teacher conducts informal observations, worksheets, and pop quizzes to monitor the students learning by providing feedback that will allow the instructor to improve their teaching.

Interim/Benchmark
Definition: Testing is done twice before a summative assessment to gauge what the students have learned over a more extended period.

Example: STAAR test given close to the end of the school year to determine mastery of content instruction throughout the school year.
Summative
Definition: Evaluation conducted after an entire unit with a standardized test to determine mastery.

Example: Final Exams- exams prepared after an entire lesson or a certain amount of instruction given.

Diagnostic
Definition: An assessment that will inform teachers of student achievement gaps and other academic abilities.
Examples: : Where to Start Word Test: Assessment conducted to know what reading level the students are.
Example: Running Records: assessments conducted to determine what the students know before the lesson.
