Diagnostic
Definition: This type of assessment is used as a way for the teacher to evaluate a student's knowledge of a subject before they start teaching. This will help the teacher see a student's strengths and weaknesses prior to instruction.
Unit Pretest: This is an assessment that is given before a lesson to use as a baseline of students knowledge.
Entry Slips: This is very similar to an exit ticket but it is at the beginning of the lesson. A teacher can ask questions and have the students write their responses on a paper and the teacher will evaluate it later on before the lesson.
Formative
Definition: This type of assessment is a low stake assessment where it does not affect the student's grade. This is used to help adjust instruction as necessary for the teacher to best benefit the students.
Exit Tickets: Students will have a prompt of questions is answer asking them what they felt strong in and where they might still need more help in learning after a lesson has been completed.
Thumbs Up Response: This is where the teacher will gauge the class learning based on a thumbs response.
Thumbs up= I'm good don't need any extra help
Thumbs sideways= I kind of get it but need more help in some areas
Thumbs down= I have no clue what we learned I need help
Summative
Definition: This assessment is a high stakes assessment because it comes at the end of a unit or topic. The students will try their best to show their overall learning.
Midterm Exam: This exam is given to student halfway through the year to see what they have learned so far.
Final Report: This is an essay that students will write to help demonstrate their knowledge of what they have learned during the year or semester. These are big in college than they are in primary education.
Interim/Benchmark
Definition: These assessments are used to help evaluate a student's progress in their learning. We are seeing if they are on track for upcoming assessments and determining where the gaps still are.
Snapshot Exam: This is a district test that helps determine where the students progress lies within the content area. This is taken twice before the end of year testing.
Renaissance Testing: This is a district exam for Houston ISD. It is computerized and show the students growth in knowledge for Math and Reading.
Performance
Definition: This assessment is where students will be completing tasks or constructing an answer with open-ended questions to demonstrate their knowledge instead of taking a regular multiple-choice assessment.
Creating a Portfolio of Work: This is where a student may gather up their previous work from previous lessons to demonstrate their learning and growth.
Presentation: This is where a student will make a PowerPoint based on their knowledge and present it to the class to show what they have learned.
