Formative
Definition: The process with which teachers gather evidence of student learning. The evidence is used to adjust or modify instruction and receive feedback from students. This assessment is low stakes such as discussion or quiz.
Concept Map: Students will draw a concept map in their journal to represent their understanding of today's topic.

Summative
Definition: Summative assessments are at the end of a unit and used to evaluate student learning. Examples include standardized tests, final exams or big projects. These types of assessments are high stakes and have a high-grade value.

Final Project: Used to assess students understanding over topics being covered over a period of time.
Interim/Benchmark
Definition: Assessments given to students to see where they currently stand in their learning. They are used to determine if any modifications need to be made or if they are on track. They are also used to monitor growth according to specific learning goals.
STAAR State of Texas Assessment of Academic Readiness. Is given to students at the end of the school year to assess their knowledge in the current grade level content.
Renaissance Star 360 a computerized test used to check students' growth toward their learning goals and identify different skills students are ready to learn.
Diagnostic
Definition: assessments intended to measure what students know and can do in order to support their learning. They are pre-assessments used to plan instruction needed to support the student's needs.
Running Record: Used to assess the students current reading level to determine if they are ready to move to the next level.
Pre- Assessment: Students will complete a pre assessment on life cycles prior to beginning the unit on life cycles to assess their knowledge.
Performance
Definition: An assessment that requires students to directly demonstrate what they know and are able to do through a series of open- ended tasks.
Conducting an investigation; students will conduct a science investigation and record their findings their journals.
Creating a graphic organizer: students will create their own graphic organizer to demonstrate their learning of the content.
