Souvenir from a place of interest
Client possibilities:
.
The sill - a place of interest with the sycamore gap along with the roman wall - history and have great artwork which could be integrated into the designs.
Sea life - local and of importance - education opportunities and since gift shop is mostly plushies there are opportunities for other souvenirs.
The balic - a great existing gift shop - not necessarily a problem but could be used as an existing place for inspiration. Have souvenirs related to art work and follow the theme of art. Most products are functional however cost is high.
The olympics - non existent yet for the france, design opportunities for plush mascot, medals, and branding opportunities
Museums, hancock - educational souvenir opportunity. Good gift shop but lacks memory for integration with meum features eg the butterfly wall.
Butterfly world - the best idea - bad existing gift shop that does not supply memories. No branded products and very generic items. Butterfly world helps save the butterflies with the revenue money but if gift shop doesn't attract people back then money is lost.
Importance of souvenirs:
.
Tracking where you have been - acts like a token of landmarks and must reflect that particular place.
Sentimental value provokes memories of day-outs or holidays that can be reflected on for years to come. - perhaps a souvenir should have some sort of relation to a particular part in that trip.
Encourages revenue and returns to the original place. A reminder of how the experience is and souvenir can spark a return, a souvenirs quality has to reflect the quality of the experience.
problems with existing souvenirs.
There are not many original souvenirs, all copies with different logos on them. This means that it is not distinguishable to the place with uniqueness, why return to this particular place if it is the same generic gifts and therefore experience as other places? Not special = no memory
What is described as “rubbish” products are often brought home and forgotten about. There isn't a lot you can do with a keychain apart from put it on your keys and forget about it. Needs to have some sort of purpose or use to keep the memory alive.
Often not sustainable. You buy these in the moment but often forget about them and they go to landfill and these products are often made from non sustainable materials such as plastics.
Ideas to make souvenirs more memorable
.
See process of making yourself therefore there will be more memories attached the to the place of interest.
Puzzle idea, you can go around landmarks to collect all parts of the souvenir, encourages tourism to different branches and gives a sense of accomplishment.
Typical list of souvenirs and advantages and disadvantages of them. :
Key chains, - generic. Often include photos from the trip in them so it is a direct memory of the place. Often put on car and house keys which are used daily which is good for a constant reminder you will see often.
Photo frames - again generic. Can add own uniqueness in design in frame. Often don't come with a photo so are left empty in drawers. Used as decor around the house. Could be apart of a collection?
Fridge magnets - see daily when you go to the fridge, reminder. Often not creative and just a logo. Some people don't have a magnetic fridge.
Models - more unique to that particular place, e.g you wouldn't get an eiffel tower model in london. Not much use. Can be easily forgotten about and put in a drawer. Sometimes too big. 3d model more eye catching however.
Christmas decor - only has one use a year. Easily forgotten about in the rest of the months. Some people don't celebrate christmas .christmas often associated with happy which can make links with the place of interest.
Tickets - often not bought in a shop but a keepsake of a concert ect. Nowadays they are often just qr codes that you print out with no style, could perhaps make something more unique and artistic that could be displayed on a photowall, a fridge, a photo frame ect.
Wristbands - similar to ticket. Some places have a cheap paper band that doesn't last long and you have to cut off to get off wrist. Ruins the keepsake, could design something easy to get on and off and can be used outside of particular area of interest.
Lanyards - more useful if you are in education. E.g teacher or in university or college, aimed at an older target market. To those who do use it it will be used daily and there are lots of design opportunities.
T shirts - great idea however often not fashionable and therefore most won't wear it day to day. If wear shirt that promotes a certain area, it is free street marketing as others can find out about and area through clothing.
Tote bags - used regularly in travel, education and more. Useful and opportunities for design, not unique but can be made unique through artwork.
Pin badges - decorative and collectable, can be put on school blazers etc, similar to t shirt marketing.
