Guiding Questions
Irregular galaxies are created from collisions of elliptical and spiral galaxies, so what do you think irregular galaxies are made of?

Formative
Definition: The process of gathering information about a student's learning to alter instruction. These assessments are used only to provide the teacher with feedback on how to adjust instruction.
Quick Write: The teacher can give students two minutes to write as much as they know about galaxies. The teacher can read the quick writes and determine if the lesson needs to be altered.
Task Cards: The teacher can have students match or solve task cards to assess if the students know the material. If they do, then the teacher can continue teaching. If the students do not, the teacher needs to go back and teach differently.
Interim/Benchmark
Definition: Periodical testing to see if students are on the right path to success. These tests are low-level, and students do not get much feedback.
Old STAAR Tests: Many schools use old STAAR tests to benchmark their kids. The students take the STAAR like they would their STAAR at the end of the year and use it to indicate if they are on track to pass the upcoming test.

Summative
Definition: High steak testing is done at the end of a unit. Requirements to ensure it is a high-quality assessment. These assessments prepare students for taking high-steak tests later in life.

Semester Exams: Taken at the end of a semester to determine what a student has learned that semester. Usually worth a high percentage of the student's grade.
Performance
Definition: An assessment that asks students to demonstrate what they know by performing a task such as a play or creating a project.

Diagnostic
Definition: Test that informs the teacher of achievement gaps or abilities. These are done at the beginning of a class or unit.
Pre-Course Quizzes: Many courses have pre-course quizzes that students must take to inform the teacher of where each student is at the start of class.
Student Work Sample: A collection of the student's work paints a clear picture of the student's ability.
