Carbon foot print of foods
There are 19 million tonnes of carbon dioxide released into the atmosphere due to the imports of food.
Beef has the highest carbon footprint due to the land usage, methane production
Carbon footprint refers to the amount of greenhouse gases
The carbon footprint of foods affects the environment as it can cause global warming and climate change
You can lower your carbon footprint of food by, consuming local and seasonal products, limit meat consumption, select fish from sustainable sources, use reusable shopping bags, buy the food you need to avoid waste
Is food wastage an avoidable problem
Approximately 1.3 billion tonnes of food is wasted every year
1) There should be proper storage of food grains, pulses, fruits and vegetables. 2) Leaving food uneaten in meals should be prevented. 3) Excess food should be refrigerated and then reused.
food wastage is categorised into 2 types, avoidable and unavoidable. unavoidable is stuff that we cant eat such as peels, bones and shells avoidable is edible but gone off or past its use by date. unavoidable food wastage should be composted
37% of household food waste is unavoidable. 63% is avoidable
meat industry and the environment
Cows produce methane when they are being farmed meaning they have the highest carbon footprint of any farmed animals
Meat such as pork, chicken, lamb, mutton, beef, duck and fish have some of the highest carbon footprint of any foods
the meat industry can affect the environment because of the carbon footprint which the meat industry has a large one. if the meat industry was abolished there would be a massive drop in global carbon emissions
The use of cows, pigs and other animals for food, as well as livestock feed, is responsible for 57% of all food production emissions, the research found, with 29% coming from the cultivation of plant-based foods.
lack of land leading to food shortage
veganism and vegetarianism has less impact on the environment as it uses less land that a meat eaters diet.
land grabbing is when a big company buys lots of land which then affects the locals ability to sustain thier own families.
lack of land is not the only reason for food shortage there are other reasons such as poor management, conflict, climate change, population, unfair trade policies
the lack of land can lead to a food shortage and insecurity as the crops farmed are not enough to support local communities and prices will rise meaning that poorer or deprived people will struggle to get food
food accessibility leading to obesity
scientists have found there is a link between food insecurity and obesity
over populated areas that have no access to green areas may not have the education to know where to sorce healthy food from
people may not have access to healthy food like they do convenient and fast unhealthy food.
food accessibility isn't the only cause of obesity there are lots of other causes such as lack of education, lack of cooking skills, lack of exercise
Is there a lack of vegan/vegetarian options.
0.5% of the population are vegan and 1.5 billion people are vegetarian
overall vegans and vegetarians find they have a lack of options on restaurant menus with an average of 2 options per menu
