Pill form goes from mouth to esophagus to stomach
In the stomach it starts to dissolve. Some gets absorbed in the stomach while other remnants move on to the small intestine
In the small intestine, the drug finishes dissolving and get absorbed.
CHALLENGES!!! The drug molecules have to be small enough to get through the stomach and/or intestinal lining.
Many medications are sensitive to stomach acid and can be destroyed!! Medications sensitive to this (Insulin) cannot be given orally and instead given a different route.
After absorption, drug molecules travel to the liver.
Liver enzymes can destroy drug molecules and often can't get past the liver!!
The molecules that survive get distributed to the blood stream for distribution.
The heart pumps blood through the body along with the drug molecules
Drug molecules can bind to protein and fat in the bloodstream and prevent them from ever reaching their destination like the tissues.
Drugs are designed to hit their proper targets and the target is the cell it binds to and does its job. This is when the drug begins to work.
Side effects happen when the drug binds to something other than the target.
