Chapter 26: Research Proposal
Definition:
a document written by a researcher that describes in details the program for a proposed scientific investigation
Characteristics of good research proposal
Facts should be written clearly, sharply and precisely
Ideas should be properly organized using headings, sub-headings and paragraphs
Problem to be studied are presented in a straightforward statement
Process of preparing a research proposal
:
Read critically the related literature
research problem
research questions and/or hypotheses
research methodologies and procedures for conducting research
data analysis
discussion about the potential results of data analysis
research implications, limitations and time frame
references and appendices
Common weaknesses in research proposal
Lack of research problem:
proposed problem is not clearly described or is not relevant to he body of knowledge
Lack of appropriate research hypotheses:
Hypotheses are not clearly defined and they're developed based on non-adequate evidence to support their statement
Lack of research design and methodology:
Proposed methods, measurement instruments and procedures are not capable to provide sufficient data to answer the research questions and/or hypotheses
Lack of researchers' capability:
Researcher doesn't have sufficient skills to develop a research proposal
Lack of resources
(e.g., equipment, finance etc.) to accomplish the proposed research topic
Criteria for judging the research proposal
2. Research problem
selected from related research articles must be clearly stated
3. Research objectives
must be clearly stated and must be represent the research problem
1. Literature review
should reflect the area of study
4. Research model
must show a clear and reasonable relationship between 2 or more variables which supported by previous research findings
5. Research questions and/or hypotheses
should reflect the conceptual framework which predict a clear relationship between two or more variables
6. Conceptual and operational definitions of variables
should be clearly defined based on the research purposes
7. Research design
strategies should be appropriately selected to minimize error in data collection and analysis
8. Research sample
should be collected from related population under study and may clearly determine the unit of analysis for the study
9. Data collection techniques
can be developed based on qualitative approach, quantitative approach or combination of both approaches
10. Data analysis
based on qualitative and/or quantitative data collection techniques using proper procedures
11. Discussion about the results of data analysis
through comparing the related literature with research findings
12. Implication and limitations of the research
should described clearly the expected outcomes to theory, research methodology and practitioners
13. List of references
should be written properly following a reference format
