Interim/Benchmark
Defintion: A form of a formative assessment that entails periodic testing throughout the school year. Interim Assessments tend to be low-level as well as require little to no student feedback.

Summative
Definition: Assessments that are often high stakes with the goal of evaluating student learning at the end of an instructional unit by comparing it againts some standard or benchmark.

Performance
Definition: Assessment that requires students to directly demonstrate acquired and/or current knowledge through open-ended tasks
Example: Requiring students to answer an open-ended short response question to show mastery of the topic taught.

Diagnostic
Defintion: Assessments often given at the beginning of the year which are then used to inform teachers of students' achievement gaps and other academic abilities.

Example: Pre-assessment tests that allow the teacher to diagnose students’ current level of knowledge.

Formative
Definition: The process of collecting evidence of/monitoring student learning in order to effectively provide feedback, adjust instructional strategies, and allow opportunities for learners to change their behaviors.
Example: Concept Map - Requiring students to draw a concept map in class to demonstrate understanding and mastery of the topic taught.
Example: Asking students to submit one or two sentences identifying the main idea of the given lecture.
