Cellular Mechanism
Form of passive exercise which passes a low level electrical current through the muscle to cause a painless contraction - mimics normal muscle contractions
Electrical stimulation activates motor points = these impulses stimulate and activate motor nerves = muscle contraction
Electrical current stimulates type 2 fibres before type 1 due to a lower stimulation threshold, known as synchronous firing pattern. This is opposite order to normal muscle contraction
Contraction = increases blood flow/lymphatic = increased nutrients + O2 = increased removal of toxins + chemical irritants = stimulates healing + reduces pain
Contractions also encourage muscle strengthening, mass, tone and endurance.

Setting:
Mode = synchronous
Very weak/marked atrophy =
Pulse rate = 10Hz
Pulse width = 100-200us
on/off = 5 seconds on and 20 seconds off
Start at 5-10 minutes + build up to 1 hour
Minimal contraction
Muscle endurance=
Pulse rate = 20Hz
Pulse width = 100-200us
On/off = 5 seconds on and 5 seconds off
At least 1 hour / day
Minimal to medium contraction
Muscle strengthening =
Pulse rate = 30Hz
Pulse width = 100-200us
On/off = 5 seconds on and 5 seconds off
Ramp = 3-5 seconds ramp up
15-30 minutes per day
Strong contraction
