COLD THERAPY - Coggle Diagram
COLD THERAPY
-
Cellular mechanism
Transmission of energy from skin to cold pack, via conduction, creating a temperature gradient
Applying cold = transmits heat out of the area = causes firing of thermoreceptors = detected by hypothalamus = stimulates norepinephrine = vasoconstriction = decreases blood flow
-
Cooling tissue = reduces rate and enzymatic effects of inflammatory process = reduces histamine, tissue damage and irritation of nerve endings
-
-
Pain mechanism
Pain affects the thermoreceptors which responds to change in temperature = basically freezes their ability to transfer the action potential so reduces pain
Cooling the nerves = decrease nerve conduction velocity and blocks transmission = muscle spindles and GTO will fire slowly and there will be a decrease in firing of alpha motor neuron = decreases muscle spasm
