Interim/Benchmark
Definition: An interim/benchmark type of assessment is used to see the progress students have made and measure their mastery toward a TEK or academic goals set in place.
STAAR: A Texas standardized test given to student's starting in the 3rd grade all the way to the higher-level grades. Assesses student's knowledge they learned throughout an entire school year and measures their mastery in grade level TEKS in subjects' mathematics, reading, and science (fifth grade).
MAP: Tracks the growth of a student learning in mathematics, reading, language, and science. It's adjusted to a student's instructional level, it maps out what a student is ready to learn, which maximizes their learning.
Perfomance
Definition: A performance assessment is used to assess student's understanding of a topic through their performance completing a task, they are able to create and construct rather than taking a test and answering questions.
Theatre-Play: Students reenact one of their favorite scenes of a text including story features such as conflict, climax, resolution. Students are able to develop their oral language and improve their fluency and comprehension skills.
Science fair: Students are able to show in-depth learning through self-creations of a project they learned in science class. Students might be required to explain or defend their work to those attending the science fair.
Formative
Definition: A formative assessment is a flexible way to assess students on a daily basis in the classroom to observe and assess students' progress and adjust instruction accordingly to support student's needs.
White Boards: Students can write their responses during math action wall on their multiplication fact families.
Oral responses: Students answer orally to questions the teacher asks during a read-aloud of Pete the Cat. The teacher is assessing for student's understanding on main idea.
Summative
Definition: A summative assessment is planned and used toward the end of a semester, unit, or school year. These are used to measure student's progress over their mastery of an accumulation of content.
Project-based: Students create a cell model out of clay or playdough replicating either a plant or animal cell, which includes all their appropriate organelles and structure parts.
Mid-term/End Exams: Students answer a variety of questions (multiple choice, short answer, fill in the blank, drawing) to assess what knowledge the student has after the whole unit is done.
Diagnostic
Definition: A diagnostic assessment are a type of pre-assessment to measure student's current knowledge on what they already know about a topic before a unit or lesson. The data from these help teachers prepare and plan differentiated instruction that will support student's needs.
Pre-Assessment: Students must match the vocabulary words in a word bank and write it next to the correct picture of each text features. The teacher can assess what text features students already know and still need help understanding.
