- - - - Examples of new literacy can include the following: print, graphic design, audio, video, gesture, nonstop interaction, blogs, and wiki
        Most of these interactions are all through screen media platforms, which are used not only throughout our classrooms but throughout our every day lives. We use these platforms and media outlets to communicate with our family, friends, and much of the world to gain our knowledge and insight.
    - - Examples of New Literacy Assessments:
        
        Personal Blogs - This would allow a student to research a topic, then put into his/her own words the information that he/she has retained from his/her personal research. You would be able to gather first-hand the intellectual and emotional connection(s) the student has had with the topic, allowing other students to read and comment to allow them to better understand the material through another's view point.
        
        Video - This allows students to not only research material, but to form a visual platform for his/her viewers to gain knowledge through movement and interaction with another. Students can create his/her own video on an assigned topic, then allow the class to watch to create connections and experience to continue to expand knowledge on a given topic.
        For one, I would select a video over a text insert any day! I am a visual learner, who has to watch something in order to master it. I prefer to watch someone solve a similar problem to what I am having and gather knowledge to solve it there rather than instructions. Many times when doing my research, I select videos to listen to gather my information.
        
        Graphic Design - This would allow a student to create and form visuals to explain material that he/she has researched. It is an easy way to organize material that he/she has retained from most important to least important.
        Think about this assignment now. We have taken regular, plain text and put it into a graphic to allow other students to learn what we have through a visual concept. It's the same material that we have read, but just put into a pretty, shiny presentation, allowing it easier to gauge what we have learned.
  - - - Now think about the same assignment, but this time think about allowing the students to research World War II through interactive blogs, videos, graphics, and more. Imagine the hyperlinks that would take their general knowledge of the war to truly being able to experience it in his/her own personal views. Your student(s) would retain more information through exploring and researching this topic in new literacies, rather than just through examining the texts over 20 something pages.
      - All students are different, so why shouldn't assignments and research be different? We as teachers have to take the extra time and efforts to making our curriculum match our student's wants and needs.
  - - - Personally, my favorite assignment(s) throughout all of my school years (elementary through higher education) is when I have to write a discussion board about something that I have researched about, then comment on someone else's work. The ability to jot down any thoughts, ideas, take backs, and more from what a small article has provided, then to read the take from someone else's view leaves me with so much more information.
        I am able to see through the lens of someone else's take on a subject matter, then put it into my own thoughts and experiences. I am able to relate and remember material through several scopes rather than just what I have found on my own.
      - When I try to think about how can I incorporate this info my very own classroom, I somewhat struggle.
        I teach first grade ELA, and soon I will be embarking on a new journey being self-contained ELA and math with inclusion students. I know that there will have to be lots of planning ahead to differentiate for each of my students, whether being high or low. I will have to find new methods to reach my students' individualized needs and find new literacies that will be impacting and successful to each individual student.
        How is that you ask? Well, here's a few of my ideas..
        
        Providing new digital literacies for my students to interact with such as graphic organizers throughout the room, hyperlinks, videos, and other powerful graphics for them to learn from. I feel sometimes sitting in a classroom at 6 years old, reading from the same PowerPoint slide throughout a 60-minute period is boring. I need to explore the digital world around me and provide more outlets for them to learn.
        
        Creating interactive blogs and wikis for my students to collaborate and express his/her thoughts, even if it's just through a poll. I want to be able to see my students' successes through more than just a "paper and pencil" method. This not only would allow them to read and practice their instructional material, but be able to express him/herself through writing, which is another crucial strategy they will need all throughout their school career.
        
        Allowing students to be more creative when turning in assignments and assessments, rather than just through worksheets and boring quizzes. We all know that kids these days know more about technology than we do, so we need to put them to the test to master new tricks and trades and explore the world around them. There's several tools right in front of them that they can video themselves reading, or even answering a discussion question for their peers to watch and interact. We can use these literacies to help them communicate better and form lasting impacts to follow them to be better students from year to year.
- - - - Tier One
        Students who are classified as Tier 1 students receive high-quality, research-based instruction differentiated to meet his/her needs. These students are screened periodically to identify struggling learners who need additional support.
        Content area teachers play an important role at this level of intervention. These students can succeed inside the classroom without little to no intervention needed. He/she can succeed in whole-group instruction.
      - Tier Two
        Students who are classified as Tier 2 students receive targeted instruction differentiated to meet core curriculum studies. These students have not found the same success in the classroom as students who are in Tier 1.
        Tier 2 students are monitored more frequently to determine if intervention strategies have been successful. Content area teachers typically receive support, as needed, from literacy coaches and specialists to ensure that the students are making adequate process at their grade level(s).
      - Tier Three
        Students who are classified as Tier 3 students receive individualized, intensive interventions that target the students' skill deficits for the remediation of existing problems and the prevention of more severe problems.
        Literacy specialists and special education personnel are responsible for providing Tier 3 interventions and work closely with classroom teachers to meet the student's individualized needs.
  - - - Ways to Differentiate
        There are many ways that teacher(s) can differentiate readings for students inside the classroom. Throughout this chapter, we touched on a few.
        One major way that we can do this is by incorporating many of the new literacies that our world provides us with today. If we can find the literacy that matches our student(s), then we have found a way to effectively read his/her interests and become more effective teachers.
        
        Computer Literacy - this is the literacy with the aid of the computer. This literacy is the most effective for those who are the most familiar with computers and its functions.
        
        Digital Literacy - this is the literacy that is often defined as the ability to use digital technology (beyond the realm of a computer), communication tools, or networks to locate, evaluate, use, and create information.
        
        Information Literacy - this is the literacy the denotes the ability to identify, locate, and access appropriate sources of information to meet the one's needs.
        
        Media Literacy - this is the literacy is even more encompassing in that it refers to the ability to access, analyze, evaluate, and produce communication and information in a variety of media modes, genres, and forms.
        
        Health Literacy - this is the literacy that is a more specific type of information-based competence denoting someone's ability to obtain, process, and understand the basic health information and services needed to make appropriate health decisions.
  - - - Schema is works in three (3) ways:
        
        Second, schema helps readers organize text information. This is the process by which you organize and integrate new information into old facilitates the ability to retain and remember what you read. This allows readers to illustrate what he/she is reading to help him/her to understand and bring the text to life.
        
        Lastly, schema helps readers elaborate information. When you elaborate what you have read, you engage in cognitive process that involves deeper levels of insight, judgement, and evaluation. These readers tend to engage and ask questions as he/she reads to have conversation with the author.
        
        First, schema provides a framework for learning that allows readers to seek and select information that is relevant to their purposes for reading. This allows the readers to make inferences on what to anticipate and predict is going to happen in the text and fill in the gaps in the material during reading.
