Cellular mechanism
Transmission of energy from heat pack, across the skin via conduction, creating a temperature gradient
Applying heat = causes firing of thermoreceptors = sends message to hypothalamus and stimulates bradykinin = causes vasodilation = increased blood flow
Vasodilation = increased blood and lymph flow = helps reabsorb oedema, remove toxins = increase oxygen and metabolic rate = upregulate cells and produce ATP = optimise healing
Vasodilation leads to decrease in sympathetic output and conduction velocity of sensory and motor nerve = reduces smooth muscle contraction + muscle spasms + reduce pain
Heat sends the muscle spindle, GTO to sleep and reduces muscle spasms and causes muscles to relax
Pain mechanism
Stimulates A beta fibres which directly inhibit the stimulation of a delta and c fibres = reduce pain
