Duck's Phase Model
Evaluation
Strength - Useful for helping couples mend relationships. Insights can be used by friends and family to enable couples to work through problems during intrapsychic or dyadic stages. So is a practical real-world application.
Weakness - original model failed to acknowledge personal growth. Rollie and Duck (2006) - added stage of resurrection after grave-dressing to account for period of personal growth. This change is supported by others - Tashiro and Frazier (2003) - who found personal growth to be important part of breakdown process. This makes model more valid to reflect dynamic nature of relationships.
Cultural differences within stage so order may vary. Temporal validity - 1982 to 2022, society has changed. Individual differences. Not everyone follows these stages in order.
Duck (1982)

Found certain factors threatened relationships - both dispositional (personal) and situational (environmental)
Proposed phase model of relationship breakdown. Breakdown is not a one-off event but a gradual process of distinct phases.
Each partner reaches a threshold - their perception of the relationship changes, they become dissatisfied and the relationship starts to breakdown. They can reach this threshold at different times.
