Chapter 10: The Research Problems
Research problem/ problem or statement is the heart in conducting a scientific research.
Steps in identifying a research problem
Empirical gap
- contribute to the development and expansion of the knowledge about one specific matter and help to explain the relationship between one aspects to the other aspects in the work life
Practical gap
- represents the importance or seriousness of the issue in the present situation or environment
Theoretical gap
- represents the macro and micro perspectives of the issue from the academic work of scholars, researchers and other writers
Research problem can be used as a guideline to choose appropriate research design, sampling strategy, data collection techniques, data analysis techniques, discussion about the results of data analysis and writing research report
Deductive approach to identify research problem
Step 2: General topic of study
Step 3: Specific topic
Step 1: Area of study
Criteria for good research problem
has not been investigated before
existing theories regarding topic of study do not discover a problem
existing approaches with respect to topic of study are not thoroughly discussed
existing related research findings only focus on a specific issue
previous research findings has not establish conclusive findings
available to be investigated
motivates researcher's interest personally or professionally
