Chapter 7: Reviewing the Literature
Literature is the main source of ideas for determining a research direction, research methodology and procedures, and discussion about the results of data analysis
Source of literature
Primary:
Reports, theses, emails, conference reports, company reports, some government publication and unpublished manuscript source
Secondary:
Newspaper, books, journals, Internet, some government publications
help researcher to develop a good understanding of insight into previous research and knowing what is going on in that field of study
Tertiary:
Indexes, abstracts, catalogues, encyclopedias, dictionaries, bibliographies and citation indexes
Functions of the literature
1. Seeking clarification and focus on the research problem
help in understanding an important research problem
Four major steps of reviewing related literature:
Begin with choosing one interesting subject that you want to investigate
Select one broad topic
Choose one specific topic to be declared as the crucial problem
Research problem should be supported by existing theories
2. Developing the theoretical framework
Based on the information gathered from related literature, researcher can use existing theories and and previous research findings to develop and support their conceptual framework
3. Improving the research methodology
Read carefully the related literature can help the researcher to understand the strength and weaknesses of previous methodologies so appropriate research methodologies can be selected
4. Broadening important knowledge in the area of study
Reading critically the related literature can help researcher to identify research gap that exists in the area of study
Implications of neglecting the related literature
Hypotheses that are developed based on hearsay/guest will lead to make incorrect conclusions
Research designs applied are faulty
Sampling procedures that are adopted from previous studies are faulty
Data collection procedures that are developed will gather inaccurate data
Statistical procedures that are applied in data analysis is not appropriate
Conclusions drawn from data analysis are incorrect
