Weakness of LON
Structural weakness
Various parts of the League did not work well together and was understaffed and disorganized
The working relationship between the General Assembly and the council was not clearly defined
Hard to take effective action as hhe League required all countries the Council and a 2/3 majority in the Assembly to agree
With so many nations represented in the League, it was extremely difficult to get all nations to agree on any decision
Lack of authority
Economic sanctions
Military sanctions
The League was supposed to limit or stop trade with the offending country so the offending country would comply to the league's measures
League members did not want their economy to be affected and offending nation could just leave the league if they were unhappy with the league
The offending country could also trade with countries that were not members of the league
Without any authority to impose economic sanctions to deter the behavior of the offending countries, LoN would merely give a verbal warning and the offending countries would become bolder over time
LoN did not have an army to enforce its measures and its members were not willing to get involved as they were still recovering from WW1
This caused the league to fail as the league could not impose its measures to deter offending and aggressive countries
Limited membership of LoN
The USA, despite being the world's largest national economy at the time and as a military power did not join the league due to its isolationism policy
The league did not have the necessary economic and military backup of the USA
Many European countries were facing economic problems and were militarily weak from their efforts in WW1
Certain countries not allowed to join
Therefore, each country sought to build its own strength and did not want to get involved in other conflicts
Germany for starting WW1
Germany as it was a communist country
Post-war attitudes and distrust among major powers
Britain and France suffered many casualties during WW1, Italy was dissatisfied with what they received after the war, Japan wanted more recognition and USA practiced isolationism
:league members were unwilling to disarm as it would affect their ability to Protect their interests and territories
Attitudes of the major powers were affected by the disastrous outcome of WW1 and did not want to fight another war
The major powers view their own concerns and interests as more important than the league's goal of world peace and security
