Topic 2.4 Bonding, Ions and Ionic Compounds
Bonding
-
-
-
Elements form compounds by either losing, gaining or sharing electrons so as to achieve a stable electronic configuration similar to the noble gas (octet or duplet structure.) Thus atoms combine to achieve a more stable structure.
-
Two types of bonding:
- Ionic between metals and non- metals
- Covalent between non-metals
-
Ionic Bonding
-
Ionic Bond are usually formed between metals from Group I,II and III and non metals from Group V, VI or VII.
Elements in the middle of the Periodic Table Group IV contain 4 valence electrons. Too much energy would be involved to lose or gain 4 electrons. As a result, they do not form ionic compounds.
