HOSPITAL
The first hospitals were only used for slaves and soldiers. Physicians were assigned to certain ships or armies to treat the wounded.
The most common causes of death in Rome were poor sanitation, famine, disease, epidemics, malnutrition, and warfare.
The Romans were very religious and had many beliefs so the development of these hospitals was prolonged.
The first ever Roman hospitals were built in the 1st and 2nd century AD because there were a lot of wounded people
The Valetudinarium was established when there were too many wounded that they were not able to treat all patients in private homes.
The Valetudinarium was a field hospital which began as a cluster of tents dedicated to wounded soldiers. It provided insight to how doctors treated different types of wounds which allowed it to be used to treat soldiers. Over time, they developed into permanent facilities and hospitals soon became part of Roman fort architecture.
There were many sections in the hospital and it was connected by a hall that could have been used as a triage center. The building also included a large hall, reception ward, dispensary, kitchen, staff quarters, and washing and latrine facilities.
SURGERY
Surgery was normally used as a last option because of the risks involved. However, when it was used, it was only used on the surface of the body because the rest could not be treated.

Science
The Romans first used the Greeks ideas for science and they decided which ideas were the most important and which were less important.
Most of the scientific work the Romans did was to help them in battle, such as making weapons to destroy the enemy.
There were many different Roman authors who studied science. These include; Cato, Varro, Cicero, Ceaser, Seneca, Galen and many more.
The Romans wrote about many different scientific ideas and they made new discoveries and thought of new theories to help with the understanding of the world and to help them in battle.
Scientific achievements
Architecture: The Romans used the main Greek bases when they were building but generally, their buildings were much more decorative. They were very ambitious in their building structure and so they started to use bricks in new ways. They created new buildings, such as the Basilica, amphitheatre, triumphal arch, and granary buildings. They also started to use underfloor heating.
Astronomy and Astrology: The Romans copied the Greeks and what they had done before in the topic of Astronomy but most of the things were made more accurate. For example, measuring the time using sun dials became more popular and a lot more accurate. Astrology was the link between humans and the stars/moons.
Engineering: The Romans were masters at engineering and they invented many new tricks to make things easier in their daily life. The fact that they had new technology and new inventions, meant that whenever they went to war, they had an advantage. Roman weapons fired bigger missiles, further and a lot more accurately. The Romans also used their engineering skills for entertainment. They used it to make all the shows seem a lot more realistic.
