Verbs & Tenses
Vocabulary #5 - Regular Verbs:
It is a verb that has uniform conjugations, without modifying its root, according to the time or way in which it is conjugated.
In English, the "usual" rule is to add "-ed" or "-d" to the base form of the verb to create the past forms.
Examples of Regular Verbs:
Accept = Accepted,
Amuse = Amused,
Bake = Baked.
Simple Present Spelling Rules: -s and -es endings:
Add -s to most verbs:
Examples: Dance = Dances / Work Works.
Add -es to verbs ending in -sh, -ch, -s, -x, and -z:
Examples: Whatch = Whatches / Fix = Fixes / Do = Does.
Change -y to -i and add -es to verbs ending in a consonant + y:
Examples: Fly = Flies / Candy = Candies / Copy = Copies.
These endings have three different pornunciations,
which are: /s/, /z/, /əz/
Examples:
/s/ = Stops, takes.
/z/ = Rubs, Reads.
/əz/ = Relaxes, brushes.
Tenses
Simple Present Tense: Negative Statements and Contractions
In Negative Statements you don´t add -es or -s to the verb.
Contractions: -Do not = Don´t. / -Does not = Doesn´t.
Examples: I don’t like you. / We don´t work. / She doesn´t love you. / He doesn´t know anything.
Use Don´t for = I, We, You, They.
Use Doesn´t for = She, He, and it.
Tenses
Simple Present Tense: Interrogative Statements and Short Answers
They are a question of Yes or No.
In Short Answers, we use Do/Don´t or Does/Doesn´t, but never the verb.
Examples:
Does he study english? = No, he doesn´t.
Do you drink coffee every morning? = Yes, I do.
And there are the WH questions that go to the beginning of all which can be: Why, Where, Who, Which, When, etc ...
Tenses
Simple Present Tense: Verb to be
Verb to be = Am, Is, Are.
Use Am for = I.
Use Is for = He, She, It.
Use Are for = We, You, They,
Negative Contractions:
Are Not = Aren´t .
I Am Not = I´m not.
Is Not / Isn´t.
Examples:
He is very tall.
Are you crazy?
They aren´t kind of wird.
I´m very happy.
This only use for Facts.
Tenses
Simple Present Tense
Simple Present: Affirmative Statement:
Examples of affirmative sentences:
I play video games / She plays video games.
They drive to Peten / He drives to Peten.
Use the Simple Present for Habits, Routines, Schedules, and Facts.
Irregular Verbs: Do, Go, and Have:
The verbs do, go, and have are irregular for he. she, it, and singular subjects.
Use Do, go, and have for = I, You, We, You, They.
Use Does, Goes, and Has for = He, She, and It.
Examples:
I have to do my homework. / -Why does it rain?,
I go running every day. / -The last group goes to the USA.
have been trying to figure this out. / -He has been living with her for years.
