Animal characteristics
General Animal features:
Multicellular, Eukaryotic heterotrophs
-
-
All animals except sponges, have cells organized into structural units called tissues
-
Feeding & digestion:
-
After obtaining their food, animals must digest it.
Some animals, digest their food inside specific cells
Others, digest their food in body cavities or organs
Cell structure: The cells of all animals, except sponges, are organized into structural and functional units calledtissues. A tissue is a group of cells that is specialized to perform a specific function
Movement: The evolution of nerve and muscle tissues enables animals to move in ways that are more complex and faster than organisms in other kingdoms.
-
Support:
Invertebrates- animals without backbones, exoskeletons are tough outer coverings that provide a frame- work of support. But some invertabrates have endoskeleton
Vertebrates- animals with backbone, an endoskeleton grows with the animal. It protects internal organs, provides support for the body. The material making the endoskeleton varies; calcium carbonate/ cartilage/ bone.
Reproduction:
-
-
Animals, such as earthworms, that produce both eggs and sperm are called hermaphrodites. They produce eggs and sperm at different times
