Left Realism, HOWEVER, Jock Young believes the NLG did not go far enough…
Left Realism
Causes of Crime
Relative Deprivation
Lea and Young - argue that although poverty has decreased and society is more prosperous, people are more likely to feel deprived in relation to others
-
Subculture
criminal subcultures often form as a response to relative deprivation and lack of legitimate opportunity to achieve society's goals
Marginalisation
marginalised groups are not represented by organised groups that can represent them and have power to pressurise employers and politicians
as a result, such groups feel frustrated and powerless so that may be expressed through criminal means
Crime in Late Modernity
in the 50/60s society was characterised by full emplyment, low divorce rates and strong communities meaning there was a low crime rate, but since the 70s, unemployment had increased and jobs and communities were much less secure
as a result, relative poverty increased and families and communities destabilised
all members of society has access to media messages promoting consumerism - this is called 'cultural inclusion'
however, the poor continue to be excluded from attaining this lifestyle - this is called 'economic exclusion'
Downward Relative Deprivation - all levels of society feel relative deprivation, e.g the resentment created when we hear of bankers receiving a bonus, is similar resentment to what the MC feel towards the underclass who are seen as lazy
as a result, in late modern times (now), crime is widespread and can be seen in all areas of society
Evaluation
bad - Marxists criticise them as they blame the WC for high crime rates and fail to recognise high levels of cooperate and white collar crime

Tackling Crime
-
main way to tackle crime is to deal with the underlying causes such as inequality and discrimination
New Labour's "tough on crime, tough on the causes of crime"
New Labour's stance on hate crimes and domestic violence we all based on the Left Realist beliefs that the lower classes are most likely to be victims of crime
introduction of ASBOs is based on the LR view that WC communities must be protected from low level crime and disorder
'New Deal' policy attempted to help young people find work and prevent them being economically excluded
They see WC crime as a real problem, believing that the inequality of Capitalist society is the main cause of problems
believe that the main victims of crime are the disadvantaged groups e.g WC, ethnic minorities, women etc.
