Flow chart To Identify and Help Struggling Students
Adjust
Differentiate my instruction for lessons and activities
Scaffold learning opportunities to be sure student has ample opportunities to build their learning and skills
Allow various opportunities or activities for student in the specific areas of struggle to ensure diverse learning opportunities and decipher the potential cause of this struggle
Assure the classroom environment is the least restrictive environment for the student and they are given enough support and assistance
Research the specific students struggle and identify new activities and opportunities or teaching styles
Observe
Observe the student carefully throughout lessons and daily tasks
Notice specific academic skills that might be difficult for the student as well as behaviors, interactions, physical abilities
Identify which behaviors or areas the student is struggling
Know the background of the student as well as home life situation or any changes or events that may have occurred recently
Discuss with local co-teacher, care taker, and specialist teachers their observation of the student
Discuss
Discuss with other co-teachers further plans
Discuss with teacher peers the situation (omitting personal information of course) for possible suggestions
Discuss with parents and receive their feedback and observations
Discuss with administration further plans, suggestions and solutions. Have a conference discussion with parents, teachers and administration (the school I work for does not utilize IEP's so this would be the equivalent, less formal version per se)
Further Research, Adjustments and Suggestions
Continue to research similar situations and adjust where necessary
Stay consistent if observing positive changes within the classroom or positive feedback of observations from co-teachers and parents
Allow appropriate time for student to adjust and show potential improvements as they are very young
Suggest further assessment or professional observation (as deemed appropriate culturally) if the difficulties consistently continue
