How accurate is it to say that the failure of republican governments in the years 1649-60 was primarily down to divisions over religious issues?
Richard Cromwell 1658-59
weak compared to the presbytarian and royalist Parliament whom he allowed to sit. Failure to rally politically and gain political support. Rump recalled by army officers dismissed Richard and he abdicated May 25th 1659
Considered an inadequate leader by the army, who refused to support him, creating the crisis that led to the restoration of the monarchy.

Nominated Assembly 1653
The nominated assembly was partially elected by Churches which instilled a power of religion. Also elected by radical groups, creating a mixed Parliament - members from Scotland, Wales, Ireland and England.
-
Long Parliament 1640-60
Responsible for the execution of Charles I, abolishment of the monarchy and declared a republic - HOL also abolished as few lords remained and this meant that the chamber was un-needed making Britain a Unicameral system

Also Consider the influence of the Army on Cromwell, and the collapse of Richard Cromwell's rule being due to not having the support of the army.
The army prevented the humble petition and advice and refused to support Cromwell becoming king, meaning that the failure of the government in this instance was due to the army.
The Humble Petition and Advice 1657 seen as divisive in religion due to Cromwell being offered the role of 'King'-was rejected on the basis that the army would not support the idea of Cromwell becoming King-political problem rather than religious.
- Allowed for regular elections and limited religious toleration.
- Parliament would control the army and officers of state would be approved by parliament.
- Provision for a hereditary succession
- The Lords and Commons to govern with the protector
- Government by a king (lord protector as Cromwell rejected monarchy)
judgement:
The Failure of Republican governments between 1649-1660 was primarily down to political divisions (and the failure to reach a political settlement) rather than religious divisions.Issues such as religious toleration, and how to respond to religious radicalism were mostly solved unsuccessfully, political issues, and the input of the army, were most significant in causing republican governments to fail.
whilst religious divisions infringed upon political divides between parliament and king or Lord Protector throughout the entire 17th century, being a large cause for concern on who could worship freely and who was treated poorly, within an 11 year period over 6 forms of government took power proving political divide was the primary factor in the failure of republican governments.
The Rule of the major generals was a poor system, ended rather quickly due to a lack of interest and skill from the generals, however there were much stricter rules in some districts depending on the generals, ultimately causing this form to fail.
