Appeasement
-
What was it?
Policy adopted by Britain and France by which they would make concessions to Hitler and other dictators in order to avoid going to war. There were different views about appeasement. Some were for and some against this appeasement policy but it was accepted finally because the Allies could not afford going to war at the moment. What they didn’t know was that this policy would be one of the causes led to war later on.
For
-
Avoid another war
They remembered their experiences in the First World War and wanted to avoid another war at ALL cost.
German army
Germany was rearming publicly and other countries in Europe could see that she was better armed than Britain and France.
British army
The British government believed that they were not ready for a war against Germany. Britain only started rearming in 1935 and Intelligence suggested that they were militarily, behind the Germans.
USA
Support from the USA had been vital to Britain's success in WWI, so they were not sure if they could face Germany without them. In 1919 the USA had adopted a policy of isolation which meant that American leaders were determined not to be dragged into another European war.
Britain's empire
Britain was not so sure that every country in their empire was in favour of a war. There was also Japan (Hitler's ally) who was threatening British interests in their Asian colonies. Britain could not go to war if their empire was threatened.
Treaty of Versailles
Britain had second thoughts about the Treaty and they seemed to believe that if they allowed Hitler to modify the clauses of the treaty they had nothing to fear from him.
Economic Problems
Britain and France had debts and were still dealing with the effects of the Depression. There was a lot of unemployment they couldn't afford another war
Against
Trust Hitler
Many times had Hitler made promises to end his territorial demands in Europe but they never stopped. He was not trustworthy.
Hitler allies
Hitler had seen how his allies had succeeded in other countries and the failure of the League of Nations and Britain and France to stop them had encouraged him to become bolder.
