traditional marxism
-
-
criminogenic
poverty may mean that crime is the only way working class can survive- only way to obtain consumer goods encouraged by capitalist advertising- theft
alienation and lack of control over lives mean lead to aggression- non-utilitarian crimes such as violence
crime not confined to working class- competition between capitalists- greed mean that they commit white collar crimes.
-
argue that-
all laws reflect interest of bourgeoisie- vast majority of uk law is property law. proletariat have no say in the creation of laws and punishments. SNIDER- few laws challenge the unequal distribution of wealth- laws perpetuate capitalism
law, crime and criminals performs ideological function for society. some laws appear to benefit working class- health and safety
Pearce- laws benefit the bourgeoisie too, by keeping workers fit for work and giving capitalism a caring face- false consciousness
law enforcement and punishments- working class crime punished with longer sentences and therefore criminals are presented as threat to society
powerless groups criminalised, police ignore crimes of powerful
because of media representation, crime appears to be a largely working class phenomenon
-
EVALUATION
marxism is overy deterministic- it ignores the fact people have a choice about how to behave. not all poor people commit crime.
prosecutions for corporate crime do occur- however marxist counter argue that such prosecutions make the system appear fair and impartial.
NEO MARXIST-
TAYLOR ET AL sociologists should not see criminals as passive individuals unable to control their situation- crime was a deliberate choice made by individuals often to fight against capitalism
argue crime and deviance should be explained in a way that considered the wider social context and why individuals choose to be deviant
-
STUART HALL- policing the crisis- newspapers carried stories about muggings from black males-- created a moral panic which led to governments giving police greater power- this distracted society from the real economic problems of society.
-
CRIMES OF POWERFUL
WHITE COLLAR-
occupational crime- committed by employees simply for own personal gain, stealing from company
-
abuse of trust- CARRABINE- we put our trust in high status professionals such as doctors, bankers, police officers and so on. however some use their positions and status to abuse their trust
-
crimes like this violate the trust that society places in professionals and undermines the fabric of society
invisibility of corporate crime- when compared with street crimes, the crimes of the powerful are relatively invisible
even when they are visible, they are not seen as real crimes
-
New Left Realism
acknowledge that working class crime is a problem and suggest that much working crime is committed against other members of the working class
