Determining self
- by accepting who you are based on what we know about ourselves
- to accept/ recognize yourself, then we know who we are
- to know about ourselves through self analysis in all aspects
- William James listed aspects of self (material self, social self, spiritual self)
- we will feel lost of self when we lack any of these aspects.
- Charles Hortoon Cooley mentioned that we can get to know ourselves through other people
- other people act as a mirror and telling us who we are based on their behavior towards us
- physical reality can be measured using physical indicators/measurement
- social & psychological reality are difficult to measure, only can be measured through comparison with others
- theory of social comparison our evaluation of social reality depends on agreement by other people; a process called consensual validation
- society loves to label people such as addicts, mad, lazy, etc.
- it is related to reflected evaluation/appraisal
- label given to a person can let them know who they are
- if the person accept the label given, he/she will most-likely behave as the label depicts.
- we know ourselves through the observation towards us
- according to Daryl Bem, to understand our self we must make an observation on ourselves
- with that observation, we can analysis the cause and effect
Self Serving Bias
- we tend to remember anything that is good about us, compared to the bad attributes.
- we feel that ourselves is better than any other people.
2, Beneffectance
- we attempt to sustain or preserve our positive self concept
- we want good name from our successful event, but deny our responsibility on our failure.
- tries to maintain positive self concept that has been developed even if people deny it
