RPA2 - Insulators
-
repeat the experiment, but wrap the container in a material once it has been sealed Make sure to use the same mass of water with the same initial temperature
-
do this experiment with a variety of materials, e.g. foil, newspaper, cotton wool, carpet etc.. and record the temperature changes for each
seal the container and leave it for 5 minutes, and measure this time with a stop watch
the lower the temperature change, the better of an insulator the material is. You should find matrials such as bubble wrap and cotton wool are the best insulators
-
this investigation can also be done by choosing one material, and completing the experiment with different number of layers of the material each time to find the best number of layer for high insulation
boil water in a kettle, then pour some of the water into a sealable container (e.g. beaker with a lid) to a safe level such as 30cm3. Then measure the mass of the water in the constainer
RPA5 - Density
regular object
First find the mass of the object. Then measure the lengths of the object to find the volume, with a ruler. You can then find the density from these measurements
irregular object
measure the mass of the object. Then use a displacement can filled with water. Place the object in the can and use a measuring cylinder to measure the water which comes out. This is the volume. You can then use this to find the density
liquid
for each measurement, use the formula to find the density (1ml=1cm3)
-
pour another 10ml into the measuring cylinder and record the volume and mass again, and repeat until it is full
place a measuring cylinder on a balance and find the mass, by pouring 10ml of the liquid into the measuring cylinder
