CHAPTER 11 THE RESEARCH OBJECTIVES
The objectives of research
Forecasting
More frequent compare to control
Control
Objective that rarely set in psychological research
Explanation
Involve precise hypotheses to be confronted and employs inferential statistical tests
Modelling
Require the descriptive and explanatory phases brought sufficient information and knowledge about the system
Description
An exploratory phase undertaken using graphical representations and statistical measures that are not inferential
Why should Research Objectives be Developed?
Avoid the collection of data which are not necessary for understanding and solving the identified problem
Organize the study in clearly defined parts or phases
Focus the study (narrow down to essentials
Types of Research Objectives
General objectives
Emphasize what is to be accomplished
Address the long-term project outcomes
Broad statements of desired outcomes
Does not need to be numbered
Specific objectives
Specific list of tasks need to accomplish the goals
Emphasize how aims are to be accomplished
Must be highly focused and feasible
Address the more immediate project outcomes
Make accurate use of concepts and be sensible and precisely described
Numbered so that each objective reads as an 'individual' statement to convey intentions
How to state Research Objectives?
Not too vague, ambitious or broad in scope
Cover the different aspects of the problem and its contributing factors in a coherent way and in a logical sequence
Be realistic about can accomplish in the duration of the project
Are clearly phrased in operational terms
Be interrelated with the general objectives
Are realistic considering local conditions
Be presented concisely and briefly
Use action verbs that are specific enough to be evaluated
Avoid using: to appreciate, to understand, to study
Specific
Measurable
Achievable
Realistic
Timely
