Do not have a clear lexical meaning
but do a serve a functional purpose in a language
Function words are
considered a
Closed Class
These are words such as
Articles
Prepositions
Conjuctions
Pronouns
Words are made up one piece but many other words are made up of more than one component
These components are called morphemes
MORPHEMES
A morpheme is the smallest unit
of meaning in a language
Free Morpheme
Is a morpheme that can stand alone as a word. A free morpheme is
the opposite of a bound morpheme

A morpheme cannot be reduced into smaller parts without a loss of meaning
