Functions
One way to classify emotions is by referring to their own functions. The adaptive, social, and motivational functions of emotions are briefly described below. According to Piqueras, Ramos, MartÃnez and Oblitas, emotions fulfill the following functions:
Adaptive function: it consists of preparing the organism to effectively carry out the behavior required by the environmental conditions, mobilizing the necessary energy for it, as well as directing the behavior towards a specific objective.
Social function: Emotions fulfill important functions in social communication, such as: a) facilitating social interaction, b) controlling the behavior of others, c) allowing the communication of affective states and d) promoting prosocial behavior.
Motivational function: The relationship between motivation and emotion is close, since it is an experience present in any type of activity that has the two main characteristics of motivated behavior: direction and intensity.
