Assessments
Formative
Definition: Formative assessments gather evidence of a students learning. It provides feedback for adjusting instruction that can be used to enhance a student achievement. Formative assessments can be a way teachers to understand what students understand and what they may not.
Examples:
Exit Tickets: Students will be able to answer 1-2 quick questions that assess their knowledge and understanding about the content they have learned before exiting class. This shows evidence of student learning for the teacher.
Kahoot Game: A game-like assessment that engages students and tracks the class and student progress in learning a concept. This can help teachers to target instruction and gather insights of how to plan for future lessons.
Interim/Benchmark
Examples:
6 Week Test: A series of questions students are assessed on of the content that has been taught over the 6 weeks. This shows student measurement, progress, and areas of improvement.
IStation's ISIP: This is an engaging progress monitoring test that tracks students progress overtime. It assesses student ability in domains like reading throughout their academic year.
Definition: Interim/Benchmarks are periodically tested throughout the school year. It evaluates students progress and determines if a student will perform well on future assessments within the school year.
Summative
Definition Summative assessments are assessed at the end of a unit. This is a high-quality assessment that have high point value.
Examples:
STAAR: Is a Texas standardized test taken at the end of the school year over academic core subjects students have learned/ achieved.
Book Reports: Is a summary to display students literacy knowledge and skill. Book reports are to have students target the main points of the whole book from their reading.
Performance
Definition: A performance assessment is an assessment where students must perform a specific task rather than being assessed in a testing format.
Examples:
Student Presentation: Allows the student to demonstrate the content they have learned by creating a PowerPoint or Google Slide to display elements they want to talk about.
Science Project: Allows the student apply their knowledge and skills about a concept. This can have the student explain their work by creating a product.
Diagnostic
Definition: Forms of pre-assessments used to determine the student's strengths and weaknesses. Information acquired can guide teacher how to adjust their instruction based on student needs.
Examples
Running Records: Provides information about a students reading. Serves as a resource for teachers to analyze and think of methods for further instruction.
Pre-assessment on Content: Gathers information about students prior knowledge and what they are capable of doing before instruction.
