Organic chemistry
Fractional distillation
-
Crude oil (mixture of hydrocarbons) is heated, most alkanes evaporate
Column is hot at bottom, cold at top

-
Formation of Crude oil
- Millions of years ago marine organisms (plankton) lived in the sea
- When they die the plankton fall into the mud and sand at the bottom of the sea but didn't rot away
- Over millions of years the remains were buried deeper by the mud and sand
- Temperature and pressure changed the mud and sand into rock/sediment and the organisms into crude oil.

Cracking

Therefore matches supply and demand by breaking a long chain alkane (often undesirable) into short chain alkane and alkene
Making polymers
-
-
Polymerisation of ethene
-
Formed at lower pressure, 50 degrees and a catalyst
-
-
high density polymer, stronger and higher softening point
