Assessments
Formative
Definition - The process of gathering student learning in an informal setting. Formative assessments are used to adjust instruction, and learners can change behavior.
Examples -
Pre-Assessments or informal quizzes are a great way to assess what a student already knows or doesn't know about a particular topic. Instructors can adjust lessons based on student results.
Exit tickets are a way to quickly have students write what they have learned during a lesson. For example, an exit ticket could ask: one thing you learned, one thing that surprised you, and one thing you are still unsure of.
Interim/Benchmark
Definition - They are given to assess where students are in their learning. The exam provides evidence of gaps in learning. They are given periodically throughout the school year. It provides little or no student feedback.
Examples -
An end of a chapter exam is an excellent example of an interim exam. It will provide evidence of learning and allow the teacher to weave in material in the next module of learning.
A project with a scored rubric is another example of an interim assessment. It will allow the student to demonstrate knowledge regarding a particular topic before moving on to new material.
Summative
Definition - An assessment or exam that is given at the end of a unit or large amount of material. They usually are measured with a high-stakes value resulting in high grading value.
Examples -
A mid-term or final exam or end-of-unit exam.
Standardized tests such as the SATs is also a way of demonstrating knowledge of a vast amount of material.
Diagnostic
Definition - A pre-assessment that allows instructors to gauge where students are regarding particular subject matter before instruction begins. The diagnostic identifies strengths, weaknesses, and misconceptions.
Examples -
A pre-quiz to assess where the students stand regarding new or potentially new material is a way to conduct a diagnostic exam.
A running record is a way for teachers to administer a diagnostic test to discover where students are with reading fluency. Instruction can be formulated based on the results.
Performance
Definition - A type of assessment that requires a student to perform or demonstrate what they know in performing an activity.
Examples -
A portfolio-based assessment allows students to show understanding through a collection of work, such as the edTPA exam for teachers.
A lab investigation is a way a student can demonstrate understanding through a hands-on lab assessment.
