Formative
Definition: An assessment that is ongoing and monitors students understanding of content. With the goal of being utilized to enhance students learning according to students' responses.
Example: Student responses during class discussion: Teachers analyze and observe students ability to answer questions as an inviting environment is created.

Example: Formative technology quizzes: The use of technology within a lesson to be notified of students understanding or possible misconceptions in a safe environment that prepares students for summative assessments. ( Kahoot and quizzes)
Performance

Definition: Assessment that measures a students ability to apply their acquired knowledge and skills to authentic problems.
Example: Student work portfolio: Requires students to used their creativity to display their own work.

Diagnostic
Definition: An assessment used to identify a students areas of needed support and strengths. This allows a teacher to be notified of a students current abilities to then utilize what they know or are able to do to enhance weaknesses.
Example: Pre-test: Short test that are presented to students before the lesson begins to notify the teacher of previous learned knowledge of the concept that is going to be taught.
Example: Running Records: Assessments conducted to identify a students areas of strengths and weaknesses when reading a passage.

Summative:
Definition: A formal Assessment that measures a students knowledge in a certain concept or content area. This assessment includes a grade that is measured according to a rubric or checklist.
Example: End of the year research project: A project were students are given a certain task they must complete with specific instructions to follow and are graded according to their completion of the required instructions.
Example: Book reports: A written/typed report that is based on a book students read. That is graded according to a rubrics requirements that students were presented to follow.

Interim/Benchmark
Definition: An assessment that is used to notify if a student is making sufficient progress in order to be successful in future rigorous assessments.
Example: Map testing: A computerized assessment that is presented to students three times in a school year to measure progress in both reading and math skills.
Example: STAAR benchmark testing: Test that are presented to students twice in a school year to measure students readiness level for the STAAR test.
