binomial distribution
-
A binomial distribution occurs when there are only two possible outcomes for an experiment, where one outcome can be classes as a success and one as a failure
-
-
Sampling Methods
- Quantitative data - words
- continuous - can go on forever eg temp
- discrete - a exact answer eg shoe size
- ordinal - orders eg position in a race
- Quota data - The researcher will choose the characteristics they wish the respondents to have. For example, only sampling males who are over 50 years old.
- Paired data - two variables in the individuals of a population that are linked together in order to determine the correlation between them. eg. before and after test
- Qualitive data - describes qualities or characteristics.
- categorical - sorted in to categories
eg countries in the world
Related data
- bivariate - involves pairs such as exam results and the time spent revising it also involves sets of 3 or more related data values such as age, height, weight
Skew
Skewness describes the distribution of data compared to the averages of the data. Distribution of data can be symmetrical or have a positive or negative skew
-
-
Population pyramids
Very similar to stem and leaf diagrams, they give information about the age structure of a population
-
-
-
Independent events
If the outcome of one event does not affect the probability of another event occurring, the two events are independent
If 2 events A and B are independent, then P(A and B)
= P(A) x P(B)
-
Stem and leaf diagrams
The ordered display of individual discrete data values in a stem and leaf diagram shows the distribution of the data
-
Frequency polygons
A frequency polygon is formed by joining the midpoints of the tops of the bars in a histogram. it is a useful way to show the shape of a distribution
cumulative frequency
Cumulative frequency is a running total of all the frequencies in a frequency table. if the data is continuous, the points plotted on the cumulative frequency graph can be joined with a straight line or smooth curve.
linear interpolation
You can use the line of best fit to estimate the values within the range of the given data. This is interpolation
-
Time series
Time series graphs are line graphs which show the variation over time. Time is plotted in the horizontal axis ( X-axis )
Time series graphs will often show the variation over the 4 quarters of a year. Each quarter is a period of 3 months. Quarters are usually shown as Q1, Q2, Q3, Q4.

Venn diagrams
Venn Diagrams are a way of showing how items are split between sets.
ALWAYS DRAW A BOX AROUND THE VENN DIGRAM
conditional probability
A and B are 2 events. The probability of event A occurring given that event B has already occurred is denoted by P(A/B). Look out for the key word 'given' - this implies conditional probability. The probability of events A and B occurring is P(A/B) x P(B).
