Thermal barrier coatings
Two layer structures - ceramic top coat and underpinning bond coat. Zirconia top coat has a low thermal conductivity and mainly provides thermal insulation, protecting the metal blade beneath. The bond coat (NiCoCrAlY) provides the oxidation resistance and corrosion resistance and matches the thermal expansion and hence stress between the substrate and the ceramic coating.
Turbine blades
Turbine blades are generally made from single crystals. Cooling channels and TBCs are required to prevent them from melting during use. Ceramic turbine blades have only been in use in military aircraft.
The next step is to start using ceramic matric composites in turbine blades. Made from SiC/SiC, and will not require an environmental barrier coating, EBC

Fibre reinforced CMCs - monolithic ceramics are brittle and fail catastrophically. By comparison, CMCs fail gradually and provide warning of failure.
