Work Breakdown Structures
WBS
A deliverable-oriented hierarchical decomposition of the work to be executed by the project team to accomplish the project objectives and create the required deliverables. It organizes and defines the total scope of the project. Each descending level represents an increasingly detailed definition of the project work. The WBS is decomposed into work packages. The deliverable orientation of the hierarchy includes both internal and external deliverables.
(Project Management Institute, 2013, .n.p)
purpose of WBS:
To breakdown the complexity of the project and make the project work manageable
To communicate the scope of project
How to design a Work Breakdown Structure
Formal rules
The formal rule can be described using the concept of partition, Partition is a form of logic which you apply to sets. In the context of project management, set refers to the whole project
Heuristic rules
Use a single rationale or logic at each level of decomposition (ie breakdown)
Ensure work packages have specific dimensions
Other breakdown structures
organisation involved (Organisational Breakdown Structure)
risks (Risk Breakdown Structure).
involves breaking down the risk into sub-elements outlining sources of risk
technical risks
technological risks
geological risks
market/commercial risk
political risks.
scope (Work Breakdown Structure)
shows the hierarchical breakdown of the project’s staff into organisational clusters, eg teams, companies and departments.
