Computers and Binary
Hardware and Software
All computers have a processor or CPU - often called “the brains of the computer”.
The CPU is where most calculations and decisions take place.
Objects that you can touch are hardrive, like a Music CD. E.g. Disks, disk drives, monitors, keyboards, printers, motherboards and chips.
You cannot ‘touch’ software. Software refers to the programs that run on a computer, rather like the music playing on a CD. E.g. Windows, Google Docs, Chrome, Scratch and PowerPoint.
RAM is where the computer stores the current task that is being carried out. This is like when you are thinking about how to work out a sum in maths or what your are going to say next.
A hard disk drive can store a massive amount of programs, data files and folders. Usually between 500Gb and 1Tb.
It can access them really fast.
The graphics card is a circuit board that lets the computer display data on a screen.
Some graphics card have their own memory (RAM).
Input, Output and Storage devices
-
An output device is a piece of computer hardware used to output data which has been stored into a computer. E.g. Mouse.

Binary and Denary
Denary is the human number system. We count up in 10's because we have ten fingers. (10,20,30,40 etc.)
Binary is the computer number system, made up of 1's and 0's, which are either to be translated into ASCII (letters) or a singular number.
The Human Computer
Power Supply = Heart
Just like your heart pumps blood around your body to give you energy. The power supply pumps electricity around the computer to power all of the components.
Computer Casing = Skeleton
The case of the computer holds everything together and keeps each of the components in place, similar to the way your skeleton keeps your body together!
Motherboard = Nervous System
The motherboard sends messages to all of the other components inside the computer like your nervous system sends signals to the organs in your body.
Processor = Brain
The processor is where the computer carries out all of it’s tasks (processes) in a similar way to your brain thinks about things. Also known as the Central Processing Unit (CPU)
Hard Disk Drive = Long Term Memory
This is where all of your documents, pictures, programs etc. are stored on the computer, similar to all of the long term memories in your brain.
