MSAN GP Student: Carrie Wamble Capstone Interests, Observation: What have…
-
Observation: What have you observed that led to this interest? I observed this recently while my grandmother was hospitalized for a few days, and while she was interested in improving and preventing readmission, she was unwilling to discuss basic health education and go over the pamphlets provided by PT. I expect this to have some impact on her health after being discharged and greater potential for a relapse.
Question: What question do you have about this observation? How do the readmission frequencies of patients who accept and apply nutrition education versus those who decline or do not look at the education resources again after leaving the hospital.
Problem: What is the problem related to this observation/question? A potential problem could be patient readmissions for similar health conditions
Potential root causes: Irrelevant nutrition education as it pertains to patients' access to food, and lifestyle
Benefit: How could a project in this area help address the root cause? A project in this area would help address the biggest contributing factors as to why patients are instructed to receive education, provided resources to take-home, and yet some are still readmitted for the same or similar health issues. In my grandma's case, she didn't find any of the information relevant to herself and what she wants to improve on. Realistically, there was helpful information inside, I think most times it is her pride that prevents her from seeking help and addressing the decline of her health.

Overwhelmed by large portions? Pyschological changes which are affecting appetite? Medications taken before mealtimes which are inducing nausea?

A project in this area could help address the root cause by analyzing medication distribution times, speaking with the patient about their food preferences, and asking the resident if their appetite is being affected by medication

What are the demographics of the majority of binge-eating and/or bulimic pts, and those that may in my clientele.

Weight-dependent sports that have mentally and physically negatively affected and left a lasting psychological impact on a few close people in my life
A research project on this topic would hopefully address my interest in the link between high ghrelin levels and binge-eating disorder, to explain whether or not this condition is less of a voluntary and conscious decision and more of a genetic or physiological result. I also believe that take a closer look into the characteristics of these patients would help to create an individualized and more in-depth intervention plan that could be of great benefit to patients I will assist during my career.
