Smoking during pregnancy
Smoking during pregnancy- Smoking while pregnant can cause many complications such as miscarriage, SUID (Sudden unexpected infant death), and other complications.
Miscarriage- Tobbaco has carbon monoxide which can stop the developing baby from getting enough oxygen causing it to die.
Premature- If / when you smoke during pregnancy your baby can come prematurely (comes out early), this can cause various health issues throughout the child’s life.
Growth issues- Although smoking during pregnancy does not cause the baby to be small and underweight it can cause other issues such as, cleft palate or cleft lip. Cleft lip can cause difficulties while speaking and feeding.
Disorders- smoking while pregnant can increase your child’s risk of ADHD and autism.
Long term effects
Short term effects
Positive short term effects- When you smoke a cigarette the nicotine tells your brain to release a chemical called dopamine. The dopamine makes your brain happy, the dopamine also will help you concentrate.
Negative short term effects- The negative short term effects are anxiousness and restlessness.
If you smoke multiple times, your brain will start to crave cigarettes. When your brain is craving them you will become more irritable, and nervous. In the long term can cause depression and anxiety.
Appearance
Smoking can cause many effects to your physical appearance such as hair and weight loss, saggy skin, and early wrinkles.
Health
Smoking has many effects on your physical health that can be fatal. Long term smoking can lead to vision and hearing loss, diabetes, lung, heart and brain cancer, as well many other issues. Smoking is one of the top causes for death in Australia amoung young people.
Life expectancy
Smoking can drastically affect your life expectancy over your lifetime. 2/3’s of long time smokers pass away due to related sicknesses. 21,000 Australians in 2015 died due to smoking related causes, which is equivalent to a person dying every 25 minutes.
SUID- Babies mothers who smoke when they are pregnant with them are 3 times more likely to have a sudden enexpected infant death.
In my opinion they’re are many complex sides and opinions to smoking. If you look at it from a health perspective, smoking can critically impact your health and cause many complications. But if you look at it from a smokers perspective , they may say something about how it helps withy your mental health and how it helps you calm down from the nicotine.
There are multiple pro’s and con’s to smoking, but in my opinion the con’s far out way the pro’s. In my mind I think being healthy and not having dangerous health issues is more important than smoking a cigarette just because you crave it. This is like our unit, how consumer priorities impact our decisions.
Cultural
Overall my thoughts on smoking are that it causes many health issues and its not worth risking your life to smoke.

These are the statistics of the countries that smoked the most cigarettes: America:12.5%, Nauru :52.1%, Kiribati: 52%, Tuvalu:48.7%, Myanmar: 45.5%, Chile: 44.7%, Lebanon: 42.6%, Serbia: 40.6%, and Bangladesh: 39.1%.
These countries smoking rates are higher because of multiple factors such as minimum wage and social class. “A study by the Society for Research on Nicotine and Tobacco found that cigarette smoking prevalence is linked to lower income levels “worldwide and across subgroups.”- Babbel magazine.
Some of these countries are known for having a higher poverty rate and that’s why they smoke so much.
How the government has taken action
Different parties and there opinions
Packaging of cigarettes
The Australian government took action in the tobacco and cigarette industry by putting graphic and disturbing images as the result of smoking on the boxes ,these images include rotting gums and teeth, sick people and lungs that have been affected by cigarettes. They are trying to advertise and prevent people by showing them the affects of smoking. The governments also made it an requirement to have a plain box if it doesn’t have the images, so smoking is less tempting.
The Australian government has taken many actions to prevent smoking. They have made it illegal to advertise and promote smoking throughout Australia , as well as having sources like quit line and various campaigns, and policies on prices of tobacco and cigarettes.

Labor
The greens party is against smoking and was planning if they got elected “to make outdoor dining areas smoke free and end the Victorian government’s unethical investment in tobacco companies”.
The liberal party is anti-smoking and has taken action to stop it. They have inforced a policy that the packaging has to be plain or have graphic health warnings, so its not as tempting to purchase. There hope is that this will help people quitting and it showing the consequences of smoking.
Labor is against smoking and has taken action to help prevent smoking in australia. In 2015 labor created a policy stating that they will increase the price of cigarrets, in the idea of reducing the number of smokers and to not in courage younger audiences to start smoking.
The Australian government gets 2.4% of there tax revenue from smokers. Approximently $10.3 billion dollars of tax are paid by smokers.
The average Australian smoker spends $5237 on cigarettes each year. The Australian people spend nearly 15 billion dollars on cigarettes each year in total. Smoking is bad for your health, but the tobacco industry provides 1,100 jobs across Australia and the South Pacific.
