Romeo and Juliet is about a young couple who fall in love even though their families are enemies. this forbidden love leads them to kill themselves, but their deaths bring their families together
it's probably the most famous love story in the world, and the plot has been adapted into musicals, operas and lots of different films

shakespeare presents love as an overwhelming force that causes Romeo and Juliet to give up their families, their friends and eventually their lives
the feud between Romeo's and Juliet's families causes a lot of violence and death - Shakespeare shows how pointless and destructive hate is
Summary
act one
prologue
- the chorus, often played by a single narrator opens Romeo and Juliet with a brief summary of what's to come on stage - "a pair of star-cross'd lovers take their life"
act 1 scene 1
- the scene opens with a brawl on the streets of Verona between servants from the Montague and Capulet households. More people start getting involved and rapidly escalating until Prince Escalus arrives and stops the riot. At the end of the scene, with Romeo in his sad state due to Rosaline and Benvolio advising him to forget Rosaline and looking for another but Romeo thinks this is impossible.
"if ever you disturb our streets again, your lives shall pay the forfeit of the peace"
act 1 scene 2
- Paris, a relative of the prince, asks Capulet for his daughter Juliet's hand in marriage with Capulet being reluctant at first but then finally considering it. Capulet invites Paris to a feast to be held that night, at this feast he meets Romeo and Benvolio whom he asks for help. Romeo seeing Rosaline on the guest list, finally resolving to go despite the danger and Benvolio hoping that he finds another lady to forget about her.
"but woo her, gentle Paris, get her heart. My will to her consent is but a part"
act 1 scene 3
- Lady Capulet questions Juliet on her feelings about marriage and then informs Juliet of Paris' proposal. When her mother mentions that Paris will be at the feast, Juliet reacts with dutiful reserve.
act 1 scene 4
- Romeo, Benvolio, Mercutio and other Montagues make their way to the Capulet feast. Romeo continuing to be lovesick for Rosaline, Mercutio teases him for being such a stereotypical hopeless lover. Mercutio then delivers his speech in which he describes how the fairy delivers dreams to humans as they sleep. The scene concluding with Romeo's sense of foreboding that evening
act 1 scene 5
- Romeo and his attendees arrive at the Capulet feast and Romeo sees Juliet and instantly falls in love with her. Tybalt sees Romeo and sends someone to kill him, a violent outburst is stopped by Capulet as he reminds Tybalt of Romeo's good character and to keep the peace. Romeo and Juliet start to kiss but get interrupted by the nurse who sends Juliet to find her mother. While that happens, Romeo talks to the nurse about Juliet finding out she's a Capulet, realising the consequences of their love. The feast ends so Romeo leaves with Benvolio and the others. Juliet finds out Romeo is a Montague from the Nurse at the end.

prologue
- the prologue summarises what has previously occurred in act 1: Romeo has forgotten his ostensibly undying love for Rosaline and is instead pursuing Juliet, whose "looks" are idealised. also with the difficulty of Romeo (a Montague) being with a Capulet is highlighted
