Abraham Lincoln being elected to president is in a way, the thing that started the Civil War. Even though he was republican, the southern states did not want him as president and was just another reason for why the south wanted to secede from the United States.

The Siege of Vicksburg was one of the Union's biggest wins of the Civil War. Whoever could take over the city of Vicksburg, would have control over the Mississippi river, and could cut the opposing side's forces in half. It was a 47 day battle, but ended in the Union taking control of the Mississippi river, and cutting the south in half.

The Battle of Antietam was sort of in a way, a Confederate invasion of Maryland. Confederate general Robert E. Lee had plans of detaching Maryland from the north, influence the upcoming congressional elections, and impress Europe with his southern military power.

Newly appointed General Ambrose Burnside had a goal of crossing Rappahanock river and taking control of the city of Fredericksburg before the south could. Burnside had a plan of crossing Rappahanock, getting to Fredericksburg, as the south had not gotten there yet, and setting off an attack once the south got there. However the attack failed as he couldn't cross the river itself due to their pontoon bridges not making it to the army in time.

The Emancipation Proclamation was an article written by Abraham Lincoln declaring that slaves in the south be freed, as he did state that border state slaves don't have to be freed. However, the article sort of sparked a new mentality for a lot of people, maybe even a new look on slavery, this article showed the people that the Civil War was a war for slavery.

The Civil War started in Wilmer McLean's backyard, McLean moved away to distance himself from the war, and the war ended in McLean's new living room, with confederate general Robert E. Lee writing a 5 sentence letter of surrender, and lt. general Ulysses S. Grant writing a 3 sentence letter back.

Was the first organized land battle of the civil war. The Union was to protect the Baltimore and Ohio railroad. However they found out about new confederate troops not organized into regiments, and attacked. It ended in 26 confederate casualties, and 4 union casualties.

However general Hooker of the Union was replaced by general George G. Meade, pushing gen. Lee to reform his plan and moved his corps to Gettysburg.

Sherman's March to the Sea was a march from Atlanta to Savannah, Georgia. The point of the march was to instill fear into people, and stop them from supporting the confederate cause. They did this by stealing food, killing livestock, and burning houses and barns of people who tried fighting back.
