Confederate general Johnston withdrew from Kentucky and left much of the western and middle of Tennessee to the Federals. Ulysses S. Grant pushed his troops toward Corinth, Mississippi, the strategic intersection of the Mobile and Ohio Railroad and the Memphis and Charleston Railroad and a vital troop and supply conduit for the South. The confederate was alerted and attacked. There were 23,741 casualties and 13,047 were union and 10,694 were confederate. The Union won, but both sides realized the war was going to be long and bloody.
