WHAT IS DEMOCRACY?
Democracy is a word that we hear and read regularly in speeches, on television, on
the radio, in the press, and often in conversations of our family. But what is
democracy? Democracy is a word that describes a way of governing. This word
comes from two Greek roots: demos, people, and cratos, government. It means,
then, the government of the people.
Democracy is closely
linked to several fundamental principles that
are based on:
The search for greater social equality, where all people have the same
opportunities and rights.
Social equity, that is, not favoring one
person to the detriment of another,
which also implies non-discrimination
due to ethnic differences, gender
differences, socioeconomic conditions,
limitations, or physical or mental
disability of people.
• The effective fight against poverty and the effective guarantee of the
rights of citizens.
Another basic principle is the preferential tax treatment for the elderly,
the special support for children for their food, education, and recreation.
With a look at our history and our present, we can see
that instability and a poor sense of institutionality have affected the validity of rights
and guarantees, and have violated democracy.
