Kush & Egypt
Kush and Egypt ;lived in peace as neighbors and Egypt supplied Kush with slaves and raw materials while Kush supplied Egypt with gold, copper and stone. They also supplied Egypt with ebony a dark wood material that and ivory which makes elephant tusks
However things were not always peaceful as Kush grew more wealthy there military grew stronger which frightened Egypt, they feared that Kush would attack. To prevent this from happening the pharaoh Thutmose sent an army to take control of Kush in around 1500 BC. The army conquered all of Nubia north of the fifth cataract making Kush a part of Egypt. The pharaoh then destroyed Kerma, later pharos including Ramses The gReat built huge temples in what was once kushitine territory
Kush remained Egyptian territory for about 450 year, during that time Egyptian influences took over Kush. Egyptians moved to Kush and egyptian became the official language of the region. Khushiyan people began to wear egyptian style clothing and adopted the religious practices. They also used Egyptian names
During the mid 1000 BCs the pharos in Egypt began to lose powere and Kushitine rulers rose up and made Kush independent once again. Popel know almost nothing about Kushitines from the time they gained control to about 200 years later. They aren't mentioned in any historical records.
By around 850 BC Kush had regained most of its strength, it was once again as strong as it had been before it was conquered. Because Kerma was destroyed the kings ruled from a city created by the egyptians called Naptat that was about 100 miles southeast of Kerma. As Kush grew stronger Egypt weakened, A series of pharos left Egypt open to attack and in 700 BC the Kushitine king Kashta conqured upper Egypt and established relations with lower Egypt by 751 BC
After Kasta died his son Pianki continued to attack Egypt. Also known as Piye he was one of the most successful Khushiyan military leaders. He was laos religious and loved horses he was buried with 8 of his best steeds. The armies of Kush captured many places including Egypt's capital . Pianki fought becuase he believed the gods wanted him to rule all of Egypt he accomplished the task and his kingdom stretch from
Sahabaka Piye's brother than took the throne and began the 25th dynasty. he tried to restore their faith in past egyptian traditions. He inspired them to build new temples and restore old ones. as a result the culture was thriving during the 25th dynasty. The army remained strong for about 40 but in 640 BC the Assyrians (from Mesopotamia.) army invaded and conquered Egypt.
Over time Kush began to weaken. Framers couldn't grow crops and wood became scarce. Because of things like this trade began to slow and eventually Aksum became much more wealthy because of trade and as Kush continued to weaken. An Askun ruler took advantage of their weakness and took over Kush. Later the rulers became Christian and Kush's old religious traditions faded.
Geography
South Of Egypt a group of African people settled in what is now called Nubia, they established the first great kingdom in the interior of Africa. The Egyptians called it Kush, the development of Kush was greatly based on the geography of the land especially the Nile River
Today Nubia is mostly desert but in ancient times it was very fertile, the Nile flooded the lands frequently because of rain which provided silt to nearby lands. KUsh developed right in that area which was also rich in gold, stone, and copper which played a major role in the areas wealth and history
The Nile banks also had grazing area for livestock so by 3500 BC villages were thriving along the Nile
The Nile provided the people with soil to plant in both summer and winter where they grew things like wheat barley and grains, they relied on this for agriculture
Some farmers grew more rich than other and in around 2000 BC one framer rose up and combined oyhter billages where he named himself king. The kingdom was called Kush, the kings named the capital city Kerma and it was just south of the third cataracts. The cataracts were natural barriers against a more powerful egyptian kingdom to the north.
Later Kush
After losing power Kushians devoted themselves to trade and agriculture and soon came back to power
They got a new capital city called Meroe and it was full of iron which helped them to grow
Meroes soon became the center of trade and people snet good all the way from possibly China
Kushians exportend all types of goods such as pottery and ostrich feathers and in turn received fine jewelry and luxury items
As trade grew Kushia merchants came into contact with other people and soon began to combine their culture and traditions with others. The most obvious influence was Egypt. Many of the Kushitine things wre not borrowed. Their homes and daily lives were unique so were the gods they worshipped
Women Of Kush
Women in Kush were active in the society, they worked in fields, raised children, and much more. Some even rose to positions of authority where they co-ruled with their sons or husbands or even ruled alone. The first woman to rule kush is believed to be Queen Shanakhdakheto 170 BC to 150 BC
As time passed the Kushitine society became more complex and more jobs became available such as artisans and priests they were influenced by cultures from the south. Egypt later played a greater role in the history of kush
