In March , Hitler decided to call another election. He hoped he would get a majority.
The Reichstag fire.
On the week before the election , on the 27th of February , there was a great fire in the Reichstag.
Marianus Vander lube , a well known communist , was arrested and charged for the crime. Hitler used it as an opportunity to crack down on communism.
Hitler persuaded Paul von Hindenburg to give him emergency powers. All communist news papers were band and the main rival to Hitler , the communists , were barred from the elections.
Nazi seats increased to 288 but were not enough to win a majority as they only possesed 44% of the vote.
The enabling laws,

It stated that communists could not vote , anyone not present was voting in favor of the bill and SA members intimidated members as they entered.
With the new found power , Hitler banned all trade unions , opposition and put Nazi's in prominent positions.

Death of Hindenburg
Following the death of Hindenburg , Hitler assumed the position of Fureh ; gaining total control of Germany.

Women in Germany
The Nazi's encouraged women to have large families to increese the birth rate. This was done to ensure the fututre of the master race.

In the wiemar government , Women had hgained many rights. However , theywere now ecpected to be house wives.

Through the marriage loan , couples were encouraged to get married.
1000 marks were leant ; depending on each child , they wouldn't need to pay back 250 marks.
Youth
Hitler wanted to indoctrinate the youth into making them the perfect Nazi's. He did this through the Youth movements and the Hitler Youth.
Movements
Hitler Youth
Boys trained to be soldiers , trained with weapons , camped and marched.
In 19399 , membership to the Hitler Youth became compulsory. About 7.5 million accepted and 1 million refused.
LOGM
Gris trained to be good mothers , domestic wives and kept their bodies fit.
Education
A new curriculum was devised. Math's questions promoted messages of war and getting rid of minorities. In history , they leant about the Nazi party and in geography , focused on Greater Germany. In biology , they learnt about the Arian prance and it's supposed brilliance.

Nazi controll.
Propaganda
Gorbals , the propaganda minister , made sure that people were bombarded with information to reinforce their support of Nazism.
Hitler made regular speeches on the radio and demanded that people know how the Nazi's are improving Germany.

Hitler created a cult of the Furer whereby he positioned himself as the savior of Germany. His image was used very carefully with ; with him serving Germany.

Opposition to the Nazi's
Young people effected
The edelweiss prates were a movement amongst the working class youth. They often beat up members of the Hitler youth and during the war , they distributed leaflets made by the allies. Their demise came after the Gestapo found this out and began to execute them.
The swing youth were a movement made up of middleclass children who were into jazz and other music from America. They allowed Jews to join them. In seeing this , the Nazi's cracked down on them.
The white rose movement was lead by Sophie and Hans Scholl. They distributed leaflets that discouraged Nazism. Their activities were reported to the Gestapo and they were publicly hanged.
The church's opposition.
Following the creation of the Reich church , many protestants were outraged. This caused the formation of the confessional church which was very anti Nazi. Many of its leaders were rounded up and sent to concentration camps. Dietrich Bonhoeffer and Martin Niemoller were one of these people.
Internal oposition.
The military opposed Hitler through the july bomb plot. Two assaisination attempts had failed prior to 1943 and now they needed to overcome Hitler. On the 20th july , 1944 , Count von Stauffenburg attempted to assasinate hitler with a bomb hidden in his suitcase. The asasination attempt failed. However , it killed 4 people and resulted in the killing of 5,745 people whom Hitler deemed to be involved.
Defeat of the nazis
By the end of 1944 , it was clear to see that the German army was losing. They had been pushed out of the soviet union and the soviet army advanced and liberated many eastern European countries in the process.

There had only been around 100,000 members of the volkstrum to defend the city.

Life for the jews
Ghettos
Jews were rounded up and sent to ghettos , sections of the city that had walls built around them. These ghettos were temporary camps that served as holding cells so that they could be sent to their final destination.
The conditions found in the Ghettos was abhorrent. There were many food shortages which forced people to starve on the limited rations that they were given. 50,000 Jews died in the Warsaw ghettos alone.
The Einzatgruppen
When the German army invaded Russia , there was more Jews under Nazi control. The Nazi organized a special murder squad known as the Einzatzgruppen. These squads followed behind the advancing lines and rounded up any Jews they found and killed them.
The final solution
After the early victories of the Nazis had meant that more Jews were now under German control , they needed a efficient way to berid them. In 1932 , the leading Nazi's met in Wannsee to discuss the final solution. 6 death camps were built When they arrived , the Jews were split into two groups and one of the groups was killed whilst the other was condemned to menial labor.

In 1933 , the SA boycotted many Jews shops and businesses.
In 1934 , Jews were banned from public places.
The In 1935 , the Nuremburg laws took away German citizenship form Jews and disallowed intermarrying.
Kristallnacht was when the Jews were physically attacked. 100 people died and many businesses were burned down as well as synagogues.
