Plastic in businesses(where does the waste go?): 75% of all plastic produced becomes waste, and less than 10% is recycled. Whilst plastic in landfill is a problem, up to a third of all plastic waste enters nature as land, freshwater or marine pollution, where it can take hundreds of years to decompose.
Advantages of using plastic for foods
Protection: protects vulnerable products from damage whilst in transit and from contamination or damage by moisture, humidity, gases, microorganisms, insects and light.
Preservation: preserves products for longer, which reduces waste by giving people more time to use or consume them before it is no longer suitable to do so.
Prevents waste: products kept together and spillages avoided.
Transportation: Allows transport over great distances, so that we have access to a wide variety of non-local produce that, in turn, encourages trade. It also saves space through stacking objects which make transporting more efficient.
Reasons why stores still use plastic
Safe: plastic is shatter resistant, containers do not break when they are dropped or knocked over, this makes them particularly useful for certain environments, such as the bathroom, around children, at the pool, by the beach or on the go.
Hygienic: plastic keeps products free from contamination. This is particularly useful for medical packaging as packaging can be filled and sealed hygienically without any human
Light weight: plastic packaging is lightweight and can take up less space than alternatives, which means lighter loads for planes and trucks and lower emissions.
Secure: plastic can be sealed shut or moulded into a safety mechanism (e.g. child proof locks on medication)
What big companies are doing to get rid of most plastic waste

McDonald’s France recently removed all plastic toys from its Happy Meal menu and offers the choice of a new book instead. Help drive demand for plastic recycling by using recycled plastic in trays, Happy Meal toys and restaurant interior design
Disadvantages of plastic
Plastic comprises up to 80% of all marine waste. This problem is caused by marine and terrestrial sources, which often build up in broad open areas where tides come together. The problem concerns us finding rubbish on land, on beaches and even in fresh water sources.
Unable to infinitely recycle plastic products, this signifies that this product is more likely to be dumped or burned down in a landfill.
More than 93 billion plastic objects are not affected annually, therefore they come into our waste stream. This is a demerit of plastic.
